Digital Extremes describes Soulframe as an online co-operative fantasy action RPG. Many news outlets call it an MMO or MMORPG, which is a genre analogy rather than the official positioning.
Short answer: No, not in the traditional MMORPG sense. During Preludes, Soulframe is a Windows PC online co-op action RPG: parties of up to four Envoys, no automatic matchmaking, no traditional PvP, and an always-on connection. The world is a shared open zone rather than a mass-multiplayer persistent server. Since Open Preludes (November 6, 2026) it is free for everyone on PC.
A massively multiplayer online role-playing game usually combines a persistent world that keeps running when you log off, hundreds of players sharing the same server and hubs, formal systems such as guilds, raids, auction houses and subscriptions, and large-scale player-versus-player modes. Genre databases and Wikipedia use these traits as the baseline. Soulframe shares the online role-playing and open-world exploration parts, but not the massive shared-server population or the MMO service layer.
Measured against those MMORPG traits, the current Preludes build looks like this:
| Trait | Soulframe (Preludes) | Typical MMORPG |
|---|---|---|
| Party size | Up to 4 Envoys in co-op | Raids of 10–40+, hundreds in one zone |
| Matchmaking | None — use Recruiting chat, Discord, or direct invites | Automated dungeon and raid finders |
| World | Shared open zones on Midrath, instance-style sessions | One persistent world per server |
| PvP | No traditional PvP mode in Preludes | Battlegrounds and open-world PvP are common |
| Economy | Crafting and limited trading | Auction houses and player markets |
| Access | Free on Windows PC via soulframe.com launcher | Subscription, buy-in, or free-to-play storefront |
Soulframe opened to all PC players on November 6, 2026, two days after World of Warcraft: Forever launched and in the same week ArcheAge Chronicles entered Steam Early Access. Coverage framed the release as a clash of online RPGs, and headlines used MMO / MMORPG as shorthand for a multiplayer fantasy RPG with a large open world. That shorthand is about the audience and the timing, not a statement from Digital Extremes about server architecture.
Warframe is the closest comparison inside Digital Extremes' own catalogue: a session-based online co-op action game that is often grouped with MMOs but is not built around a single persistent mass server. Soulframe follows that co-op session model with slower melee combat and a fantasy setting. World of Warcraft: Forever and ArcheAge Chronicles sit at the other end of the spectrum with persistent servers, large-group endgame and subscription or premium Early Access pricing. If you are looking for WoW-style raids and server communities, Soulframe is not that game; if you want a four-player co-op action RPG with deep weapon and Pact builds, it is much closer.
No traditional PvP mode exists in the current Preludes build and Digital Extremes has not announced one. Combat is PvE against the Ode forces, world bosses and dungeons. Community glossaries list PvP as outside the core loop. See the multiplayer page for party rules, solo play and online requirements. Is Soulframe multiplayer?
There is no announced 1.0 or Steam Early Access date, and Digital Extremes has not committed to MMO-scale systems. Expect any change to be announced through official Devstreams and forums. Until then, treat MMO labels in third-party articles as category shorthand, not a roadmap.
Not in the traditional sense. It is an online co-op fantasy action RPG with parties of up to four, no automatic matchmaking and no persistent mass-multiplayer server. Digital Extremes has never described it as an MMO; the label comes from press coverage.
Up to four Envoys in a co-op party during Preludes. There is no automatic matchmaking, so groups are arranged through Recruiting chat, the official Discord, or direct invites. Solo play is fully supported.
It has large shared open zones on the Isle of Midrath, but sessions are small-scale co-op instances rather than a single persistent world with hundreds of players on one server.
Structurally it is much closer to Warframe: a session-based online co-op action game from the same studio. World of Warcraft and ArcheAge Chronicles are persistent-server MMORPGs with large-group endgame and subscription or premium pricing.
No traditional PvP mode exists in Preludes, and none has been announced. Combat is PvE against the Ode, world bosses and dungeons.

Yes. Since Open Preludes (November 6, 2026) the pre-alpha build is free for everyone on Windows PC at soulframe.com — no invite, key, or Founders Pack required. Final pricing for the full release is not confirmed.
