Soulframe Preludes 16 — Latest Complete Beginner Guide (2026)
- Do the Fables first and recruit Tuvalkane — crafting, refining and Tempers stay locked until she joins Nightfold.
- Your starting Pact is not permanent: weapons are not Pact-locked and every Pact can be unlocked later. Oscelda (Spirit) is the most recommended starter.
- Match Virtue investment to weapon attunement, and save Chordstones for your main weapon rather than transitional gear.
Latest · Preludes 16 — one complete new-player handbook: first hour, Pacts, combat, builds, crafting, endgame
This is the latest consolidated beginner guide for Preludes 16, assembled by cross-reading ten recent Soulframe beginner videos and merging what their creators actually teach: onboarding, Pact choice, combat, progression, crafting, factions, and endgame. It is written as one complete starting point rather than ten scattered tips.
Scope and sources. Compiled from the official descriptions and chapter timestamps of recent YouTube guides by LaZzy, Lucky Ghost, Ser Medieval, SaraLovesArchery, TheKengineer, Gr8CJay, MinMaxMadMatti, Lorkess and others — not verbatim transcripts. Soulframe is still in Preludes (pre-alpha), so values and systems change between patches. Treat each in-game value as authoritative, and see our Beginner's Guide and Preludes 16 system guide for patch-specific detail.
Quick Answer
- Do the Fables first. Follow your Sparrow to Nightfold, finish the opening story quests, and recruit Tuvalkane the Steelsinger — she unlocks crafting, refining and Temper learning, the biggest early power gate.
- Your starting Pact is not a commitment. Weapons and armour are not Pact-locked, and all Pacts can be unlocked later. Oscelda (Spirit) is the most frequently recommended starter for its forgiving, versatile kit.
- Match Virtue to weapon attunement. Investing in a different Virtue than your weapon's attunement noticeably reduces damage. Loadouts can be respecced for free.
- Combat is a loop: build Stagger, spend it with Smite and a Finisher, then refund resources with Soul Steal. Perfect dodges and parries are the skill layer on top.
- Chordstones are the mid-game bottleneck. Do not spend them on transitional gear.
Step by Step: Your First Hour in Soulframe
- Sign up at soulframe.com and get access, or watch an official Devstream for a code.
- Create your Envoy and pick a starting Pact — Oscelda, Sirin or Tethren.
- Summon your Sparrow whenever you are lost and follow it to your objective.
- Reach Nightfold, your main hub, and complete the first few Fables.
- Recruit Tuvalkane the Steelsinger through her Fable to unlock crafting and Tempers.
- Refine the weapon you actually use, and turn on Spectral Sight while exploring.
- Talk to every NPC, pick up everything, and start collecting History Motes.
Part 1 — Getting Started and Your First Hour
Soulframe is a free-to-play third-person fantasy action RPG from Digital Extremes, the studio behind Warframe. You play an Envoy returning to Midrath, an island occupied by the Ode. Combat is deliberate and melee-first, closer to a soulslike than a looter-shooter, and the game does relatively little hand-holding.
Access comes from registering at the official site and waiting for an invitation, from official Devstream or Envoy Hours codes on Twitch, or from a Founder supporter pack for immediate entry. During open Preludes periods a key is not required.
Once in, the order of operations matters far more than any stat choice. Character creation sets your look (changeable later at Verminia) and your first Pact. From there, the Sparrow is your navigation system: summon it whenever you are unsure where to go. Nightfold is the hub where Ancestors, crafting, and most quest lines live. The opening Fables teach the core loop, and the single most important milestone among them is recruiting Tuvalkane, because crafting, refining, and Temper learning stay locked until she joins your Nightfold.
One creator tested this by playing six hours with no external guides at all. The game does lead you on its own, but players who talk to every NPC and keep the Sparrow out move through the opening much faster.
Settings and survival basics
- Heal Potion is your main recovery tool; watch its cooldown and supply.
- Grey healthbar: damage leaves a recoverable grey portion. Disengage and let it refill, or it becomes a permanent loss.
- Death penalties cost progress or items — use the in-game recovery flow immediately rather than pushing on.
- Fall damage punishes high drops; several creators devote a whole chapter to avoiding it.
- Turn on the objective and assist settings that suit you at the start, not after fifty hours.
Part 2 — Choosing a Pact
A Pact is Soulframe's class: it defines your Arcanic ability pool and your Virtue growth direction. Two facts remove most of the anxiety around this choice. First, a Pact is not an equipment lock — weapons and armour can be used on any Pact. Second, the starting choice is not permanent; after Tuvalkane is recruited, Pacts can be unlocked and swapped freely.
| Pact | Role | Strengths | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tethren | Melee / aggression | Close-range damage, endurance, Courage attunement | Straightforward in-your-face melee |
| Sirin | Ranged / stealth | Bows, ambushes, precision | Kiting and staying at distance |
| Oscelda | Caster / support | Magic, utility, Spirit attunement | New players — forgiving and versatile |
Tethren suits players who want to pressure enemies up close at a brisk pace. Sirin rewards range, terrain, and stealth openers. Oscelda is the starter several beginner-focused creators explicitly recommend, because its kit is broad and rarely leaves you stuck. Advanced Pacts such as Siren, Bromius, Duelo and the frequently top-ranked Ode Tempest unlock through story Fables, Ancestor quests, and faction membership — none of them belong in an opening decision.
If you are still torn, pick any of the three, finish the first hour, and revisit the choice after Tuvalkane is available. See the Pacts directory for per-Pact detail.
Part 3 — The Combat System
Soulframe supports melee, bow, and cast / flyblade / magick weapon combat. Weapon categories are not Pact-locked, so pick by feel — but the weapon's attuned Virtue must match your stat investment or damage falls off.
The central mechanic is Stagger. Enemies (and you) have a Stagger bar; filling an enemy's bar opens them up for a Finisher with heavy damage. Smite is the powerful strike or summoned attack that converts a Stagger window into burst, and Soul Steal refunds soul resources on finishers and kills. The rhythm to memorise is: build Stagger → Smite → Soul Steal → Finisher.
Spectral Sight is the other ability to build into muscle memory. It reveals hidden interactables, secret routes, and resource nodes, and is useful in both exploration and dungeons. Multiple guides list it among the essential beginner tips.
Defensively, you have dodging with invulnerability frames, Perfect Dodge which opens a Spectre Strike counter window, Parry and Riposte which is especially strong against bosses, and plain blocking for mitigation. Offensively, Sneak Attacks and Headshots give you the initiative, and stringing them into a Stagger-finisher combo is the standard efficient clear pattern. A small but repeatedly mentioned trick is to dodge-roll while looting so you keep collecting during a fight.
Do not over-commit: disengage after a combo and let the grey healthbar recover. That single habit prevents most early deaths.
Part 4 — Progression, Virtues and Builds
Virtues are the attribute system. Every weapon is attuned to one Virtue (Courage, Grace, Spirit and so on), and matching your investment to that attunement significantly raises damage while a mismatch cuts it. From Preludes 15 onward, each loadout can be respecced for free, so a bad split is no longer costly. Arcanic Scaling, Envoy Scaling and Item Scaling are separate growth curves — a coherent build keeps all three aligned, for example a Courage build with Courage-attuned weapons and Courage-aligned armour.
Multiple loadouts let you keep a melee, ranged, and caster setup on one character. Buildcrafting follows a simple order: decide the playstyle, invest in the matching Virtue, choose armour that shares it, then use Tempers to differentiate the build. Watch for permanent build choices — the ones that cannot be respecced — before committing rare materials.
Ancestors are the hub NPCs who gate progression. Tuvalkane is the priority. Orlick the Bicameral has a quest line tied to important unlocks, and Verminia handles appearance customisation. Levelling the NPCs in your base opens more functionality. Collect History Motes as you go, and watch for Blessed Meetings, Fipple Statues, and the Ancestor nodes inside Nightfold.
Long-term tracks are Envoy Rank (account level), Weapon Rank (per-weapon), and Pact Progression (deeper abilities). See the Envoy leveling guide for the rank curve.
Part 5 — Weapons, Armour and Crafting
Preludes 16 reworked weapons, armour, crafting and progression. The loop is: unlock Tuvalkane → obtain weapons from drops, crafting, or quests → check their Virtue attunement → refine or reforge → dismantle spares for Temper materials → raise Craftwork Rank toward Legendary.
There are two distinct tracks. Mastery is proficiency with a weapon or weapon type; Craftwork Rank caps the quality of what Tuvalkane can produce and strengthen. Reaching Legendary Craftwork is the main mid-to-late-game power path.
Chordstones are consistently named as the biggest bottleneck: a scarce material required by high-tier crafting and upgrading. Stockpile them, prioritise your main weapon and core loadout, and never burn them on transitional gear.
Refinement raises equipment values early; Dismantling breaks down weapons for Temper materials; Reforge changes or optimises properties; Cast Items and Assembled Items are the mid-chain components. Tempers are the powerful effects attached to weapons and the main source of build differentiation — in the current system you choose which to attach, and can learn, replace, or double-stack them through Striking within the limits of Craftwork Rank, weapon category, and available slots.
For faster high-tier gear, creators point to the Superior Craftsmanship boon, Cogah runs, community-documented boss farm routes, and a defensive Courage setup that makes farming far more forgiving. Armour has Defence Stats and interacts with Stagger resistance, so heavy armour aligned with your Virtue is the safe default. Keep an eye on Storage Capacity and clear inventory regularly. Our tools hub has timers and planners for these loops.
Part 6 — Factions, Votives and Endgame
Three factions dominate Midrath: Silent Rose, Alca's Children and Kith of Kings. Joining one unlocks its Pacts, recipes, and standing track. Membership opens through main Fables and Ancestor quests, and factions can be swapped later — check how a switch affects progress first.
Faction Standing accumulates through faction activities. Offerings and donations are the fast way to push ranks and unlock high-tier recipes. Votives (formerly Faction Tales) are the core task loop, Favours trade specific items for goodwill and rewards, and bounties provide steady standing and materials.
World content includes Sieges (timed events producing materials such as Lampyrite), Organs (special items used in advanced crafting or Ancestor progression), Hark the Collector (a random world event), Dungeons with hidden routes best handled with Spectral Sight, Worldtrees, and Defogging the map. Open-world buffs, Avakot's travelling shop, Regatta, Fast Travel and — from Preludes 17 — rideable mounts round out exploration.
Agari sub-bosses have valuable drops on a roughly 30-minute respawn cycle, shown by a greyed-out map icon while on cooldown. Cogah is a heightened-difficulty state: killing Agari and bosses under Cogah yields larger rewards, making it the core of efficient high-tier farming. It is high risk — bring a defensive setup first. Dedicated boss farm routes exist and beat wandering.
Endgame is the loop: pick a faction → push standing and offerings → run Votives and bounties → join Sieges, collect Organs, clear the Collector → farm Agari and bosses under Cogah → funnel the loot into Legendary Craftwork, then refine builds and plan permanent choices. See the Agari world boss guide and the farming routes guide.
Ten Beginner Tips Worth Memorising
Merged and de-duplicated from two creators' top-ten lists:
- Do the main Fables first for Pact and weapon ranks — the strongest early power curve.
- Upgrade and refine early instead of hoarding new weapons.
- Use Spectral Sight constantly for hidden interactables and resources.
- Pick up everything; key materials and motes are scattered on the ground.
- Always talk to NPCs — many quests, unlocks and vendors trigger only through dialogue.
- Tempers matter; they are a core part of any build.
- Dodge-roll while looting during combat.
- Progress Orlick's quest line for its unlocks and lore.
- Collect History Motes for Ancestor progression.
- Sort out your settings on day one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my starting Pact permanent? No. Weapons and armour are not Pact-locked, and once Tuvalkane is recruited you can unlock and swap Pacts freely.
What should I do first, before anything else? Follow the Sparrow, finish the opening Fables, and recruit Tuvalkane to unlock crafting. Everything mid-game depends on it.
Why does my weapon feel weak? Most often the Virtue you invested in does not match the weapon's attunement. Respec the loadout — it is free.
What should I save Chordstones for? Your main weapon and core loadout. They are the tightest mid-game material bottleneck.
Does this still apply after the next patch? The framework does; specific numbers do not. Soulframe is in pre-alpha and systems change each Preludes cycle, so confirm values in-game and check the per-patch guides linked above.
