The curvèd cutlass of the old Mestre. Espadarte takes its namesake from the swordfish of salty depths. Mestre thought these creatures strong in their silence. No want but hunger in those glassy eyes. Like he, so he thought. Had he never seen the swordfish flocks make their great migrations? Their dance across the currents, their yearning for warmer tides? Perhaps he always knew. Perhaps 'twas this denial that killed him.
